Kiamichi RailroadFormer Frisco lines flourish again |
Hugo, Ok / Aug 1992 / RWH
he Kiamichi Railroad came into existence in 1987 when local interests
purchased from the Burlington Northern (former Frisco) a 186-mile east-west line across southeastern Oklahoma.
The line stretches from Hope, Arkansas (with Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern connections) to Madill, Oklahoma, with branches north and south to Antlers and Paris, respectively. In 1995 the road was sold to the States Rail shortline system, who subsequently sold the Kiamichi to shortline holder RailAmerica. RailAmerica was later acquired by shortline operator Genesee & Wyoming, including control of the Kiamichi in 2012.
Shops are in in Hugo, Oklahoma, and today the KRR is 265 miles long and interchanges with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, and shortline DeQueen & Eastern. Commodities handled include coal, clay, concrete, food and kindred products, glass and stone, lumber and wood products, pulp and paper, non-metallic minerals.

Snapshots
The Kiamichi represented the western end of a summer 1992 railroad expedition through Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. The line had only been open for a few years, and you could tell from the brand new shop in Hugo that things we still getting started. The paint was still crisp on the former Texas & Pacific GP35 rebuilds. The deep purple/brown with white hash marks was a nice look in the shortline world of the early 1990s. Coming back east from Hugo to Valliant, we caught an eastbound local in the care of Kiamichi's first locomotive -- a spritely Geep making good time and lots of smoke across the flat southeast Oklahoma landscape. The chase was on in my father's 1978 Chrysler LeBaron (above). We caught the shuffle several times, including some great trestle photos shown above.
